America’s educators face several challenges, such as feeling overworked and underpaid. A study in 2023 found that most teachers work seven more hours than the average American worker despite a low base salary. Furthermore, they do not receive compensation for up to 25 percent of their work. Individuals concerned about the welfare of teachers in their community can take several steps to help.
Volunteering at a local school is a great way to impact the lives of local teachers and students positively. Individuals can provide students with one-on-one tutoring, alleviate the pressure from teachers managing large classrooms, or speak to classes about career options and other topics. Teachers benefit from non-academic volunteers, such as field trip chaperones, supporters, and local Parent Teacher Association (PTA) representatives. If a person cannot commit to joining a PTA, they can attend local school board meetings to stay abreast of issues impacting teachers in the district. Many teachers pay out of pocket for critical materials, including books. Local townsfolk can mitigate this issue by donating money to the school library or local library or by purchasing books for a specific class. Schools and libraries can sometimes provide information about donating materials to underprivileged students. Finally, community members can express their appreciation for local teachers. Gifts and donations go a long way since academia has become grueling and often thankless.
