The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes seven bully breeds whose ancestry stems from bloody bullbaiting competitions of medieval Europe. The English bulldog maintains several traits, such as predictable mannerisms.
Although the bully dog breed has a history of violence, English bulldogs or bulldogs have a friendly and easy-going demeanor. Unlike other bully breeds, such as the Working Group Bullmastiff and the Terrier Group bull terrier, the English bulldog falls into the Non-Sporting Group according to the AKC. This places it in a diverse “catch-all” category of non-working dogs that primarily serve as household pets. With a gentle and loving disposition, the English bulldog behaves calmly and predictably, making it a great pet for families with children. Bulldogs rarely exhibit aggression toward humans, but their genetic history as bullfighters can manifest in a tendency to become violent around unfamiliar dogs. English bulldogs also have relatively low energy levels, can overheat easily, and often experience breathing problems. Therefore, they require less physical exertion than most other dog breeds and generally thrive indoors.
